SEPT. 14 -- THE HISTORY OF THE DANCE

Class will begin with a multimedia presentation on the history of belly dance in America with reference to the international influences that have gone into what has become a uniquely American artform.  Belly Dance in American is a melting pot of adaptation from many cultures and knowledge of the sources of the dance, how they came to this country, how they have been transformed in America, and how they have been fused increases your enjoyment of the dance both as audience and participant.  Through photographs, video, music and lecture, students will recieve a condensed version of the the History of American Belly Dance and be provided with resources to explore further.  The second part of the class wil include learning a few "classic" belly dance steps and a very short choreography to take home with you.

SEPT. 28 -- THE SPIRIT OF THE DANCE

This second glass of the series will look how dance, including what eventually became modern "belly dance" has played a role in spiritual practice, ritual, trance, meditation, and celebration.  We will look at how dance is used to express spirit and emotion, both in traditional societies and in the modern world.  Then we will get up and move, with an emphasis on self expression and freeing our bodies to express what our souls  feel.

OCT. 12 -- THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE DANCE

The third class of the series will explore how dance through the ages has been a community building activity for women.  Many of the roots of modern American belly dance arise out of cultures where there are strict divisions between male and female and women often lived in separate communities isolilated from the outside world.  In part because of this separation and isolation strong bonds were created in these femaile communities, and much about that community was expressed through dance that eventually influenced modern belly dance.  While we have, thankful, gained much freedom in our modern American world, we sometimes have lost that sense of feminine community, the joy of sharing with other women.  In this class we will look at the historic role of the dance as a community activity, and wil explore through movement how that has been translated into some forms of modern American belly dance.

OCT. 26 -- THE RHYTHM OF THE DANCE

The final class of this series will explore thee music that drives the dance, both the traditional and the modern.  We wil spend time listening and watching,  We will analyze some of the classice rhythms and have a chance to reproduce them.  Then we will spend time dancing, and exploring  how the music translates into dance.

Tribal Style Belly Dance, Level I

Sept. 25, Oct. 10, 24, Nov. 7, 21, and Dec. 5, 6:30 to 8:00 pm, Artemesia Artworks and Yoga Studio, 323 W. Harrison St., Salisubury, NC.

We had so much fun on Sept. 10 at the Introduction to Tribal Belly Dance workshop that we decided to have a class and have even more fun. Level I Tribal Belly Dance is a 9 hours of class spread over six sessions, meeting for 1 1/2 hours every other Monday starting September 26. Come enjoy this introduction to the to the art of Tribal Style Belly Dance.

Tribal Style Belly Dance is unique in that rather than learning set choreography, you learn a language of dance that is spoken around the world. You learn a series of steps and cues that you can put together into your own unique dance, anyway you want, and you can share your unique expression of the dance with anyone else who knows the basic dance vocabulary. In fact bring friends and learn it together, then go enjoy dancing at drum circles and parties and sharing the joy of dancing together as only good friends can. This improvisational dance is based on a common vocabulary of steps and communication between the dancers. With you and your friends sharing basic tribal belly dance skills, you can turn any event into a celebration.

The classes will primarily be based on the work of Carolena Nericcio, founder of Fat Chance Belly Dance, creator of Amrican Tribal Style (ATS) belly dance, but we will also incorporate some of the work of Paulette Rhys-Denis, and Kajira, both also pioneers of improvisational tribal style belly dance. What is Tribal Style Belly Dance?? Check out the links below to experience the joy and exhiliration of this unique form of dance.
